The short answer
No. From 16 October 2026, American Express (AMEX) cards can no longer be used to fund payments to DEFT through pay.com.au.
You can still pay DEFT through pay.com.au using a Visa or Mastercard credit card, or your bank account, and keep earning PayRewards Points.
Why the change
AMEX sets rules for platforms like pay.com.au that process card payments on behalf of businesses. Payments to DEFT fall under the category of Payment aggregator/facilitator.
Under those rules, payments to DEFT can no longer be funded with an AMEX card. This is an AMEX scheme requirement, so it applies to all pay.com.au customers and plans.
You can keep using your AMEX card for other eligible payments through pay.com.au.
How you can still pay DEFT
These payment methods remain available for DEFT payments, and each one earns PayRewards Points.
| Payment method | Earns credit card points | Earns PayRewards Points |
|---|---|---|
| Visa credit card | Yes, per your card issuer's terms | Yes |
| Mastercard credit card | Yes, per your card issuer's terms | Yes |
| Bank account (bank transfer, PayTo, PayID, direct debit) | No | Yes |
To switch, choose a Visa, Mastercard or bank account as the funding method when you set up your next DEFT payment.
If you have scheduled or recurring DEFT payments on AMEX

- Log in to your pay.com.au account
- Find your scheduled or recurring DEFT payment/s.
- Cancel the payment
- Create a new recurring or scheduled payment to a Visa, Mastercard or bank account.
- Save the change.
