Fees RBA
From 1 October 2026, new RBA rules ban credit card surcharges on consumer transactions. Here's what that means for pay.com.au customers.
Surcharging
Does pay.com.au charge a surcharge?
No - our platform charges a service fee. This is a fee for the payment processing service we provide to customers via the platform.
This is different, for example, from a coffee shop – where the goods or services being provided is the coffee and then a surcharge is an additional amount charged on top for card acceptance.
Is pay.com.au impacted by the upcoming 1 October ban on surcharging?
No – pay.com.au is a bill payment service provider and our business model is permitted by the card schemes. Even though our platform fee differs depending on payment type, this does not constitute a prohibited surcharge.
Also - the ban on surcharging is not intended to cover payment service providers, see the first FAQ from the RBA here.
Interchange fees and PayRewards
Is pay.com.au impacted by the cap in interchange fees?
This is different from the ban on surcharging.
It does not impact the fees cardholders pay directly as it’s a cost that sits between the card issuer (i.e. your bank) and a payment provider.
The interchange fee cap changes only apply to Visa and Mastercard consumer credit cards.
For cardholders – this will likely have an impact on consumer credit card offers for Mastercard and Visa, including potentially earn rates for card or loyalty program points. If you’re unsure, you should contact your card issuer (i.e. bank) to confirm if these changes will impact you.
Is PayRewards Package fees or earn rates changing?
Great news - PayRewards isn't funded by interchange revenue at all. Instead, it's funded by the fees you pay for your PayRewards package.
No matter what happens with interchange caps, your ability to pay for and earn PayRewards Points isn't affected.
You can keep earning PayRewards Points on every payment through pay.com.au, regardless of what banks or issuers do with their own programs.
