Who needs to open the account?
The account must be opened — and ultimately owned — by a director or beneficial owner of the business. This is a regulatory requirement.
That said, a bookkeeper or team member can start the application and fill in the business details. At the identity verification step, they'll invite a director or beneficial owner to complete their part. Once the account is active, the owner can invite others to manage it on their behalf.
Common questions
What if I don't have a business or ABN?
pay.com.au is exclusively for Australian businesses with an active ABN. Without a registered business, we're unable to support your payments at this time.
What if my ABN details are suppressed?
If your ABN details are suppressed on the Australian Business Register (ABR), we won't be able to verify your business and onboarding cannot proceed. You'll need to update your ABN listing with the ATO before signing up.
Can I open an account on someone else's behalf?
You can start the application on behalf of a business — but the account must ultimately be completed and owned by a director or beneficial owner. If that's not you, you'll need to invite them to finish the process. The fastest way to get started is to have a director or beneficial owner open the account directly.
